Dennis Akin, Plein Air Painting Judge

Dennis Akin of Boiling Springs, Pa., is an artist/educator and Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. He has spent his lifetime teaching entirely at liberal arts colleges, "where human endeavor is studied for its breadth and richness." At Dickinson College as Associate Professor/Professor of Fine Arts from 1969-1992, he received the Lindback Award for Teaching Excellence and the Ganoe Award for Distinguished Teaching. As Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas, from 1958-1967, he received the Student Council Teaching Award and in 2010 was inducted into the Southwestern College Fine Arts Hall of Fame. He also served as Art Editor of motive Magazine, a prestigious publication of the Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church, 1969-1971.

Dennis studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, holds a BFA from University of Kansas, MFA from University of Colorado and did post-graduate studies at the Acadamie van Beelden Kunsten, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Pilchuck School for Glass, an international center for glass art education in Washington state.

His 2013 exhibit at the George B. Stuart Gallery, Carlisle Arts Learning Center, "Time and Memory," featured 12 large paintings and drawings, figure studies, etchings and 3-d works representing his career from the 1970s to the present. In that exhibit, Dennis said he used a visual language to tell tales about the ideas, feelings and perceptions he had as an artist and teacher of the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition to many exhibitions of his paintings, he is also known for his stained glass windows including 26 windows in seven buildings at Dickinson College, varying in size from 18 x 26" to 5 x 6 feet. Several of his stained glass lampshades, as well as many of his paintings and drawings, are in private collections.
