Youth Competitions Underway in Schools Now

Several competitions of the 5th Annual Plein Air Camp Hill Arts Festival are underway in 15 central Pennsylvania school districts. Students in grades 9 to 12 in public or private schools in the Capital Area Intermediate Unit and those home schooled are eligible to participate.

The Landscape Student Art Competition aims to inspire students about the Plein Air Art Movement, and is landscape-based or of the "outdoors." Subject matter for this juried competition can include architecture, figures, skyscapes, different geographic regions, seasons, weather conditions or creative interpretations and compositions.

Photography is New to the Competition This Year

Teachers may enter up to five pieces per school in both the painting and photography category, or a maximum of two per student. No works will be accepted digitally. The physical work – photography or painting/drawing with a maximum size 24" x 36" in any direction – must be submitted for judging. Entries do not need to be matted.

Approximately 25 pieces of work will be nominated into the finalist collection, which will be professionally matted by the Plein Air Camp Hill Arts Festival. Finalists will be judged and awards given in both painting and photography categories:

$300 for first prize
$200 for second prize
$100 for third prize

That artwork will be transformed into graphic flags that will fly throughout the Camp Hill festival area. Student artwork also will be displayed and for sale with the festival’s primary painting and photography juried competition pieces at the Borough’s Prosser Hall, 2145 Walnut Street, Camp Hill, during festival weekend, May 29-31.

Student finalists, their parents and teacher will be invited to attend the Collectors Preview Party and Awards Reception at Prosser Hall, Friday, May 29, 6:00 to 8:00pm, where students will be honored along with festival artists. This catered reception with live music is the only ticketed event of this free festival for the general public ($25 per person). Artwork will be for sale starting at 5:00pm for those with pre-purchased tickets.
